NSS Unit, Nowgong College (Autonomous) at a glance
Since its inception in 1982, the NSS unit at Nowgong College has tirelessly served various educational, social, and environmental causes in Nagaon district and beyond. Under the pioneering leadership of Md. Sah Alam, the unit spearheaded impactful initiatives such as cleanliness drives, blood donation camps, AIDS awareness programs, and hepatitis-B vaccination campaigns. They also championed adult education and female health programs in remote villages like Huj Gaon, Gendhali Gaon, Ujmari, Salna, and Puranigudam.
Dr. Bhuban Chandra Chutia currently leads the NSS unit, continuing its legacy of community service. During his tenure, Borhola Village in Bebejia was adopted, with efforts focused on enhancing educational resources for school children and empowering women through hygiene awareness and microfinance programs. The NSS unit's proactive stance on public health is evident in their studies on fluoride levels in drinking water, which prompted awareness campaigns and interventions in villages like Haldiati, Topatjuri, and Parakhuwa.
Today, two NSS Unit of Nowgong College (Autonomous) comprises 350 volunteers, recognized nationally and statewide for their outstanding contributions. Notable achievements include regular Massive Blood Donation camps in collaboration with the Indian Red Cross Society, benefiting the B.P. Civil Hospital in Nagaon. The NSS unit also conducts health camps and eye checkups in adopted villages, ensuring holistic community well-being.
Amidst the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the NSS unit mobilized to produce and distribute hand sanitizers, while also offering job-oriented training programs to support displaced migrant labourers. Initiatives like the mobile library and "Sarothi-the time bank" underscore their commitment to education, community engagement, and compassionate outreach.
The NSS unit of the college is actively associated with IQAC, Nowgong College (A), the Social Welfare Dept. of Nagaon District Administration, Nehru Yuva Kendra, Nagaon, Blood Bank of B.P. Civil Hospital, Nagaon, Nagaon Medical College, Red Cross Society, Assam, Red Ribbon Club, Nagaon, Nagaon Municipality Board, Nagaon District Administration, Assam Science Society and some other charitable trusts for their social and extension activities.
Noteworthy to mention that, Nowgong College (Autonomous) introduced NSS as a Value-Added Course in the curriculum of FYUGP under NEP-2020 from 2023-24 session.
Throughout its journey, the NSS unit at Nowgong College has exemplified dedication and innovation in service, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of countless individuals across the region.
