DOWN MEMORY LANE

For the first four decades of the twentieth century, there was not even a single institution for higher studies in the entire region of middle Assam. It was with the great initiative of the then Jana-neta, Moti Ram Bora and a group of knowledge-aspiring people with the primary objective of providing University education, the college started its journey on 7th August, 1944 at 6 pm with seven teachers, seven students and seven desk-benches in the Dawson High School premises. With a lease at one-rupee silver coin with the state government at that time, the hostel buildings of Nowgong Government High School came to the possession of the college.

The role played by Jana-neta Motiram Bora in establishing the institution displaying his incredible versatility as the chief architect and the founder of the college is universally appreciated. At that time he was Chairman of the Nowgong Local Board. After being elected from the Nagaon Assembly Constituency he became the Land & Revenue Minister of Assam. He showed his resourcefulness and expertise in gaining the possession of land, old hostel buildings, Government Dak Bungalow, collection of fund to run the college, construction of Bordoloi Bhavan and other activities of the college. A handful of people of Nagaon district excelled in the field of finance and policy-making for the college. Social worker, Brindaban Goswami, Puma Ch. Sarmah, Pratap Ch. Sarmah, Yog Singh Chetry, Mohi Ch. Borah, Haladhar Bhuyan, Priya Ranjan Sengupta, Bimala Kanta Borah, Dr. Lalit Baruah, Priyanath Sen and others made tremendous contributions towards moulding the institution to its destined shape.

In search of an efficient guardian of the college, the college authority was lucky enough to find the eminent scholar, Professor Jajneswar Sarma of J. B. College. In addition to English literature, Professor Sarma was well-versed in Assamese and Sanskrit literature. It was not an easy task for him to shape the institution but he battled against all odds and reached the pinnacle of success by his sheer courage, determination and perseverance. At the time of its inception, Nowgong College was affiliated to the University of Calcutta. It was very difficult to get teachers for various subjects. After the partition of the country, a few educated immigrants came and worked in the college mainly in the Science department. Nowgong College remains grateful to those excellent teachers who motivated students with their exceptional teaching abilities .

Nowgong College was exceptionally fortunate in having Dr. Suryya Kr. Bhuyan, the renowned historian, litterateur and an illustrious son of Nagaon as president of the Governing Body who worked assiduously in tandem with Principal Sarma for the academic and infrastructural development of the college. They were lucky to have another eminent scholar and academician, Dr. K. K. Handique at the helm of affairs in Gauhati University which was established in 1948.

Over the years a large number of eminent scholars and teachers, social workers and management committee members rendered yeoman service to the college and contributed immensely to the spread of higher education in central Assam. The college takes pride in its alumni working in various fields all over India and abroad.
