Established in 1944, Nowgong College, alongside promoting the study of scientific knowledge, also aimed to foster literary aptitude among students. As part of this vision, Bengali was introduced as a subject, complementing the offerings of other Humanities Departments in the College. The responsibility of teaching the subject was entrusted to Phanindralal Dutta, the then-scholar of Sanskrit. The Department started functioning individually in 1971 with the joining of Dr. J. K. Debnath, former Head of the Department, Bengali. Later Major Courses were introduced in 2006. As such the Department is catering to the requirement of studying Bengali Literature as an individual subject and a combination subject. The Department emphasises the acquisition of language skills and knowledge of the subject and regular evaluation and assessment of students within a healthy academic atmosphere. Besides teaching the teachers are actively engaged in research activities. The Department consists of two full-time teachers.
